New feature: email subscription

See the new email subscription page for info. Basically, if you don’t want to use an RSS reader, you can get new posts from this blog by email (just one email message a day, even if there are more posts).

How much is your blog “worth”?

The method is a bit dumb (calculating it in relation to the AOL-Weblogs Inc. deal), but…

How much is your blog worth?

This very one is “worth” $16,936.20! :) I’m rich and I didn’t even know it! :)

Testing Chitika eMiniMalls

Since, well, today, I’m testing the replacement of this site’s top AdSense ad with a Chitika eMiniMalls one. Let’s see what difference it makes…

This very post is the 100th article in the Tlog. Not too bad for less than 2 months. :)

Some history and stats:

  • the most often seen post of all time is still Limiting Internet Explorer to Windows Update.
  • The “Blogging tips” series currently has 24 parts, although the highest numbered part is 15. Don’t ask.
  • Top OSes: Windows (77%), Linux (11%), Macintosh (6%).
  • Top browsers: Firefox (58%), MSIE (25%), Safari (3%). Yay! :)
  • Top screen resolutions: 1024×768 (48%), 1280×1024 (21%), 800×600 (6%).
  • Only 1.2% of traffic comes from search engines. Of that, 91% is from Google.
  • Visits (not hits, real visits) per day average about 200. It was much higher than that at the time of Asa’s link, then went down, and is slo-o-o-owly rising again.

I’ll annoy you people again when I get to the 500th. :)

Testing Technorati tags

I’m testing the use of Technorati tags in my posts, using Bunny’s Technorati Tags WordPress plugin. I don’t know if I’ll keep it; I want to see whether it makes an impact on accesses from Technorati or not.

Technorati already uses WordPress categories as tags, automatically; however, if you create a new category for every new little subject you write about, pretty soon you’ll have 500 categories or more, which will make them useless. But a Technorati tag can be used to the same effect, categorizing a particular post correctly, without adding a new category to your site.

Let’s see, then, if it makes a difference. I won’t be editing most of the old posts to have tags, just a couple of them, and any future posts will have them, obviously.

The Google Sandbox

Amazing article about the Google Sandbox. Saw it mentioned in ProBlogger. I guess you learn something new every day…

Excerpt:
What is the Google Sandbox?

The Google Sandbox is an alleged filter placed on new websites. The result is a site does not receive good rankings for its most important keywords and keyword phrases. Even with good content, abundant incoming links and strong Google PageRank, a site is still adversely affected by the Sandbox effect. The Sandbox acts as a de facto probation for sites, possibly to discourage spam sites from rising quickly, getting banned, and repeating the process.

Yes, this very site is currently in the Sandbox. It’s still less than a month and a half old, so I guess it’s normal. That explains why I get so few hits from Google searches, even though the site is very well indexed (and regularly crawled) by it.

Supposedly, when a site gets out of the Sandbox, it starts getting a deluge of hits from Google. I can’t wait. :)

Well, there’s spam egg sausage and spam, that’s not got much spam in it.

Due to a lot of spam attempts (which were blocked, but were annoying), I’m now using the Bad Behavior plugin. Please let me know (probably by mail - see the “about me” page) if it refuses a legitimate comment of yours.

No, “great blog, here’s my site!” comments are not legitimate. :)

Silktide SiteScore

A service I just found out about: Silktide SiteScore. It checks your blog/site in several ways, including HTML correctness, popularity, how many people link to it, whether it includes several features, its accessibility, its speed, etc..

Then it gives you a nice score. I’ve just scored 8.3! According to them, “Your website is ranked #1,295 out of 42,352 SiteScores!” Enough to add a button to the right sidebar, I believe. :)

One thing about it, though: taking the test several times (it’s free) may give different results (I got 8.1 and 8.3 without changing anything), just due to normal Internet speed variations. And the popularity rankings will, of course, change (hopefully, improve) with time. I wonder whether the button will change by itself without me taking the test again… Oh well, we’ll soon see.

Blog Top Sites: the ascension :)

Less than a week ago, I added this blog to the technology section of Blog Top Sites. Since then, I’ve been climbing in position a lot - I’m already at 13th place! (it doesn’t have a huge number of sites there, though, but it’s still fun).

I don’t think I can ever beat the current top 3, but I hope to get in the top 5 in the not too distant future. :)

Why not submit your own blog(s) there (in the appropriate category, of course)? It’s a nice feeling, seeing your blog climbing in rank. :)

Whoa…

It’s the first time something like this happens to one of my sites. Asa Dotzler of the Mozilla Foundation linked to a certain post of mine and, if that was not enough, this site also linked to it. The result? More than 1500 hits. Not bad for a site which is still less than 48 hours old…

The power of being linked from a popular site is indeed impressive. Let’s see if it happens again in the future.

Ironically, that particular article had been in my wiki for more than 6 months…

Obligatory first blog post :)
